In automotive passive safety systems, the airbag generator is a propellant-driven precision device. Taking the igniter housing produced by a certain automotive safety system supplier as an example, this part is a 0.8mm thick stainless steel deep-drawn part. A cross-shaped weak groove needs to be cut into the top, requiring the residual wall thickness to be precisely controlled within 0.08mm ± 0.01mm—too thick and the airbag cannot rupture properly; too thin and it will be damaged prematurely during assembly or transportation. Traditional mechanical milling can deform thin-walled parts due to the force applied to the tool, and burrs are difficult to remove. Fiber laser cutting machines can achieve “quantitative removal” of material without damaging the underlying material by precisely controlling the laser peak power and pulse count. The cut cross-grooves are burr-free and free from thermal deformation, resulting in a yield rate that jumped from 91% to 99.8%.

Efficiency improvements are equally significant. With an annual demand of 5 million units, traditional milling takes 12 seconds per piece, requiring a tool change after every 200 pieces. Laser cutting, on the other hand, takes only 3.5 seconds per piece, eliminates the need for tool consumables, and allows for continuous 24-hour operation. More importantly, when OEMs change airbag triggering parameters or require adjustments to the depth or shape of weak grooves, companies can simply modify the cutting parameters in the software, completing the process switch within 2 hours and rapidly responding to customer changes.

From the precision micro-holes on gas diffuser disks to the complex contours of filter supports, laser cutting machines, with their unique advantages of non-contact processing, no tool wear, and ultra-high precision, have become key process equipment in automotive safety component manufacturing.
